Health classes explained

How Preferred Plus, Preferred, Standard Plus and Standard categories work and what circumstances result in placement within each.

Insurers structure term life around underwriting class. While nomenclature shifts slightly across companies, the framework stays uniform: Preferred Plus (sometimes called Super Preferred or Preferred Best), Preferred, Standard Plus and Standard, followed by incremented ratings for higher risk. Smokers and tobacco users occupy a separate hierarchy with corresponding premiums.

What underwriters look at

Body composition (height/weight proportion), blood pressure measurements and cholesterol levels, relatives' medical histories including early heart or cancer events, MVR findings, medication record, profession and personal pursuits, as well as tobacco/nicotine consumption. To reach the highest class requires clean findings across nearly everything; the next tier permits one or two marks; lower classes accommodate managed conditions such as blood pressure that's under treatment.

How to use the quote tool

The health assessment requires sincere self-assessment: Excellent corresponds to Preferred Plus, Very good to Preferred, Good to Standard Plus and Average to Standard. Quotes use these tiers; the underwriter validates the actual tier later. Unsure? Request both and compare, letting the underwriting procedure determine the outcome. Inflating your health status doesn't cut your price; it merely produces a less dependable estimate.

Susman Insurance Agency can guide you toward carriers with more favorable policies for your particular health profile, a consideration frequently more important than the quoted rates alone.
